Safety is the foundation for Market East’s revival. Philadelphia’s built environment plays an important role in shaping safety – and the perception of safety.
Pedestrians are the lifeblood of the corridor. Every day, over 43,000 pedestrians visit Market East.

Safety Hub
The Jefferson Joint Public Safety Hub opened on June 9th. This hub at 1101 Market Street formalizes a collaboration between The Thomas Jeffesron University Police Department, the Philadelphia Polic Department and the SEPTA Transit Police Department. Departments can more easily share resources and information as they respond to emergencies along the Market East corridor.

Lighting Upgrades
New lighting upgrades in high-traffic areas along Market East improve visibility and deter crime. At Reading Terminal Market, a $1 million lighting improvement project brightens up the Plaza at Reading Terminal Market, presented by Jefferson.

Street Improvements
The Market Street Old City Improvement Project is now complete. Between 2nd and 6th streets, design upgrades make the street safer for everyone. The new design is a Complete Street—one that is designed to ensure safe access for all road users, regardless of age and physical ability. Market Street between 2nd and 6th streets now has 44 new street trees, 55 new bike racks, 36 new curb ramps, two new left-turn lanes and signals, and sidewalk-separated bike lanes.
